Modern Classics Concert
May 10th, 2025
Don’t miss our season finale as we take you through a journey of old and new classical music.
Our Bassoon soloist, Taran Massey-Singh, is a bassoonist and contrabassoonist hailing from Brampton, Ontario, and is currently in the process of completing his Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Toronto in the studio of Eric Hall.
Taran has had the opportunity to participate in the summer academies Orford Musique and Domaine Forget de Charlevoix, and has played in masterclasses with esteemed bassoonists such as Gustavo Nuñez, Sophie Dervaux, Lola Descours, Christopher Millard, Andrew Brady, and Kim Laskowski, among others.
An enjoyer of various musical styles, Taran currently holds positions of the principal bassoon of the Milton Philharmonic Orchestra, is a rotating principal bassoon in both the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra and the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and is the contrabassoonist in the Rose Orchestra. Chamber music is something Taran holds dearly to him, as he enjoys playing with his wind quintet, No NameTM. When not playing classically, Taran enjoys playing jazz in the Downing Hybrid Ensemble, as well as performing with his contemporary trio, Stones, Breeze, and Tinder.
In addition to his held positions, Taran actively freelances throughout Southern Ontario, actively seeking out new and exciting opportunities to showcase his sound, and help foster music within communities. Having played in most major solo, chamber, and ensemble forms and settings, Taran is able to bring seasoned knowledge and experience to various groups that he plays with.
As he delves further into his musical career, Taran hopes to continue to “expand his palette” with genres and styles that he plays in, making both the bassoon and the contrabassoon more cross-functional instruments.
